To dry carpet and backing within 48 hours, remove water with a wet vacuum, pull the carpet and pad off the floor, and dry them using a fan to blow air over them.
A dehumidifier can be used to reduce the humidity in the room where the carpet and backing are drying, while fans can be used to accelerate the drying process. Water can be removed from concrete or cinder block surfaces with a water-extraction vacuum.
The drying also can be accelerated by using dehumidifiers, fans, and heaters. Hard surface flooring (such as linoleum, ceramic tile, and vinyl) should be vacuumed or damp wiped with a mild detergent and allowed to dry. They should be scrubbed clean, if necessary.

If the under-flooring is wet, it should be dried using a vacuum or by exposing it to the air. Non-porous, hard surfaces such as plastics and metals should be vacuumed or damp wiped with water and mild detergent, then allowed to dry. Scrubbing may be necessary to thoroughly clean the surfaces. Water should be removed from upholstered furniture with a water-extraction vacuum. Fans, dehumidifiers, and heaters may be used to accelerate the drying process. Completely drying upholstered furniture within 48 hours may be difficult, so if the piece is valuable, you may consider consulting a restoration or water-damage Professional who specializes in furniture.

Drywall, also known as gypsum board or gypsum wallboard, may be dried in place if there is no obvious swelling and the seams are intact. Otherwise, removal is necessary. The wall cavity is the most Difficult area to dry, and it should be ventilated if drywall is left to dry in place. (Drywall is not made out of boards of wood; traditionally, drywall is made of the mineral gypsum with a layer of heavy paper on the outside and inside. Commercial gypsum boards and drywall are also available with a variety of outside layers and coatings. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a typical new home contains more than 7 metric tons of gypsum.)To clean water-damaged window drapes, follow the manufacturer’s laundering or cleaning instructions.

To clean wooden surfaces, remove moisture immediately and use dehumidifiers, fans, and gentle heat to dry them. (Be very careful when applying heat to hardwood floors.) Treated or finished wood surfaces can be cleaned with mild detergent and clean water, then allowed to dry. Wet paneling should be pried from the wall for drying. Some water-Damaged items, including ceiling tiles, cellulose and fiberglass insulation, drywall and gypsum board, and books and papers, may have to be discarded. 5. Reduce indoor humidity (to 30-60%) to decrease mold growth by: venting bathrooms, dryers, and other moisture-generating sources to the outside; using air conditioners and dehumidifiers; increasing ventilation; and using exhaust fans whenever cooking, dish-washing, and cleaning.

6. Clean and dry any damp or wet building materials and furnishings within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth.

7. Clean mold off hard surfaces with water and detergent, and dry completely. Absorbent materials such as ceiling tiles, that are moldy, may need to be replaced.

8. Prevent condensation: Reduce the potential for condensation on cold surfaces (i.e., windows, piping, exterior walls, roof, or floors) by adding insulation.

9. In areas where there is a perpetual moisture problem, do not install carpeting (i.e., by drinking fountains, by classroom sinks, or on concrete floors with leaks or frequent condensation).

10. Molds can be found almost anywhere; they can grow on virtually any substance, providing moisture is present. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, and foods.

Mold and how it Function, The Significance,The Warning, The Effects.


  • Mold spores are microorganisms that eventually turn into spores. How exactly do these spores turn into full-fledged mold? In order for an organism to establish itself, it has to land onto something that it can grow and thrive on. These organisms get nutrients by absorbing them through their systems using microscopic threads. These threads suck material out of dead organic material such as wood and paper. Add moisture to these wood and paper products, and you have the beginnings of mold.


  • Mold is only visible to the eye when a mold colony is present. Mold colonies are detailed networks of hyphae. These are called myceliums. Organelles (basically, little organs) and nutrients can be transmitted through myceliums. Mold colonies do not consist of discrete organisms.


  • In many “fake” environments that are not outdoors, namely buildings, the environment (both the temperature and the humidity) is stable enough for mold to grow and thrive. In an indoors environment, mold colonies will mostly be noticeable as fuzzy growths over food or other kinds of surfaces.


  • Though the belief is that mold is more prevalent in warm and hot areas, some types of molds are capable of growing in temperatures as low as 2 degrees Celsius. If the temperature conditions are not stable enough to encourage growth in the mold, the mold might remain dormant and inactive. There are even molds that have survived in areas as cold as the North Pole!

There are many different kinds of spores

Those that come from mold mycelia asexually are called conidia Ð a round ball containing a genetically identical fragment of the parent fungus. Acospores are different because they are formed when the nuclei of two different spores in the same species merge. Basidiospores come from parasite fungi such as “rusts” and are often multicellular. Spores either single or multicelled, vary greatly in shape and wall ornamentation by the species. All spores, however, are small Ð they rarely exceed 100 microns and most are less than 20 microns2 . Spores also carry distinctive surface features that can cause allergic reactions, e.g., spikes, hooks, thorns, etc. adorn spore surfaces. Each species of mold produces a distinctive spore. Spore produced asexually are called conidia (conidium, singular) whereas spore produced sexually are called ascospores if produced by the main spore group, Ascomycetes. Conidia are genetically identical to the parent cell, whereas ascospores are genetically different.

For reproductive strategy, Fungi depend on wind and air for dispersing its “seed” and therefore each fungi produces a lot of spore. For example, the fungus responsible for corn smut produces about 25 billion spores per ear of corn. The wheat rust fungus produces about 10 billion spore per acre of moderately diseased plants and has been estimated to produce spore at the rate of 350,000 per second Ð up to 5.4 trillion per year. In short, every active Fungi or mold colony produces millions of spore which contaminate the air within any enclosed space.

For dispersal strategy, Fungi produce very small “seed” (spore) that stay aloft for a very long time. Even in absolute still air, an average-sized spore of about 20 microns in diameter will fall at the rate of about seven feet per minute. In fact, fungi spores are lifted up and moved by the slightest draft and conceivably stay aloft indefinitely Ð if, for example, windows in an apartment are left open. Professor C.M. Christensen at the University of Minnesota measured spore dispersal within an office building by using a marker fungus, a fungus with a distinctive color not normally found in the region. Five minutes after a culture dish was opened on the first floor, spore of the same fungus were detected on the fourth floor. Five minutes later, spore were falling on the fourth floor in amounts of thousands per square yard.4

For survival strategy, Fungi produce almost indestructible spore that survive a long time. Spore have very thick walls with dark pigmentation that defy ultraviolet light. In addition, many pathogenic spore have spiny cell walls that cause them to cling together as clumps when borne aloft. Fungi spore are capable of surviving both high and low temperatures. Many fungus colonies literally propel spore into the air by ejecting spore when water pressure builds up in the hypha stalk.
